The Braci Racing Team had a huge resurgence at Watkins Glen, September 19th and 20th.
Martin Szwarc rejoined the series with his supercharged Honda Civic Si in Super Touring for the first time since the vehicle fire back in 2025 at Pitt Race. The Civic has had an engine replacement, wiring harness swap, and hundreds of other small changes and fixes to come back from the dead and make it to this weekend.
Saturday started out cold and calm, but quickly turned into a disaster for BRT. After several on-track incidents in the morning, an announcement was skipped or not broadcasted throughout the whole paddock. This caused not only the BRT cars, but the rest of the USTCC field that were paddocked together, to miss the start of Saturday’s qualifying. With limited time left, BRT could only squeeze in a few laps to re-learn the track and set a fast lap. Dan qualified in second in USTCC, and Martin in fourth.
The race is where things really started to unravel for BRT, however. A few laps in, Martin suffered from another flat tire in his Civic. This happened to him back in NJMP almost 2 years ago now in almost the exact same fashion. At almost the same time, Dan in his Z had a brake malfunction into the bus stop that forced him to go onto the escape road. Dan chose to pull off and end the race here for safety. After more investigation after the race, the team found no issues with the brakes and determined it was the infamous “ice mode” the 370Z ABS is known for when applying the brakes too harshly.
BRT was definitely down, but not out. With a spare tire swapped onto the Civic’s rim and the knowledge that the braking issue of the Z could be mitigated by driver inputs, BRT knew they could come back to fight on Sunday.
Sunday started out wet and stayed damp through qualifying. With no wets for the Civic, Dan and his 370Z were once again the only BRT car out on track. The Z shined in the wet with its new alignment and suspension changes. Dan qualified in first of all USTCC cars, more than 2 seconds ahead of Patryk’s BRZ. The race started with the Z in the second row, just behind the Ferrari and Porsche, with the TC BRZ alongside. Martin and the Civic, not having been able to qualify, had to start at the back of the pack and work their way forward. Patryk’s BRZ got the early pass on Dan in his Z after the Ginetta came up the inside of turn 2, making a gap for not only Patryk, but also Robert Benson to come through. Now stuck in-between Robert’s VW Jetta and Andrew’s BMW, Dan had to play defense against a car in a higher class, while also trying to take his positions back. This battle ensued for the entirety of the race, with multiple overtakes happening between the three cars. Meanwhile, Martin was finding more and more pace as he learned both the track, and his Civic which went from an SP spec car, to an ST car since he last ran it. Misfortune struck two USTCC racers again this race. The first being Martin, who ran out of gas just 2 laps before the checkered flag because of the modifications to the Civic drastically changing his expected MPG during racing. The second was Patryk, who suffered from a flat tire late into the race, causing him to pull off the track early.
With these two failures, the group of Dan, Robert, and Andrew were able to get past Patryk and fight for the lead. Just before the white flag was thrown, Dan was able to launch ahead of Robert into the bus stop and keep the lead for the remaining lap, securing first overall and in TC.
The team looks to remedy a few mechanical issues that plagued both cars before finishing strong in the season closer in October at NJMP.
