MC Racing Overcomes Mid-Season Setback and Finishes Strong at Laguna Seca Indycar Weekend

September 19, 2021 (Monterey, CA) – Michael McColligan, driving the #36 MC Racing Mazda RX8 finished 5th and 4th in Rounds 5 and 6 of the Hankook Tires United States Touring Car Championship at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca.

MC Racing suffered a massive crash at Round 3 in June at Sonoma Raceway and faced a huge challenge to get the car repaired and ready for the Laguna Seca rounds. The USTCC raced as a support series for Indycar at Laguna Seca, so MC Racing was determined to get the RX8 ready for the high profile race weekend. “Thanks to Cordova Auto Parts for repairing our chassis and help from all our partners, we were able to tighten the last bolt just before loading it in the trailer for the trip to Monterey”, stated team driver Michael McColligan. For the first practice, McColligan did a few shake down laps so the team could review data and do a thorough inspection. Everything looked good so McColligan slowly picked up the pace each session qualifying P8 for Round 5. At the drop of the green flag, the pole sitter stalled causing McColligan and the rest of the field to take evasive action during the standing start. McColligan then settled into his race pace running consistent and fast laps to work his way up to 5th by the checkered flag. Despite the deep and competitive field, McColligan was again able to place the RX8 P8 for the Round 6 standing start. McColligan again ran a clean and consistent race to bring the MC Racing Mazda home in 4th. “Considering that we essentially rebuilt the entire car and had no test time, I am ecstatic with our results this weekend. The car worked exceptional right off the trailer and ran strong all weekend. It was so special to be racing with Indycar this weekend!”, smiled McColligan.
