MC Racing’s Strong Drive Keeps the Team in Points Lead

September 11, 2022 (Monterey, CA) – Michael McColligan, driving the #36 MC Racing Mazda RX8 battled hard to finish P5 and keep the team of McColligan/Lepper in the season points lead at Round 6 of the Hankook Tires United States Touring Car Championship at Laguna Seca Raceway.

The USTCC was again running as a support series for the IndyCar Championship at Laguna Seca. This race was the season finale for IndyCar, upping the excitement level even further. “It is so cool to be here in the paddock with IndyCar! I really enjoy interacting with so many fans and meeting all the excited kids makes me smile”, stated team driver Michael McColligan. Originally Tom Lepper was scheduled to drive for the McColligan/Lepper pairing for the Sunday feature race. Unfortunately illness meant that team driving duties shifted to McColligan in the Mazda RX8. With a slim points lead and the RX8 starting one position behind the rival BMW, McColligan knew that he would face a battle. After the standing start McColligan settled into his race pace with an out-of-class car between himself and the BMW. McColligan kept the pressure and was eventually able to clear the Mitsubishi and get to the rear bumper of the BMW. The battle continued lap after lap until McColligan was able to pull off a stellar pass into turn 2. “The Raybestos Brakes on the RX8 really give me the confidence to brake late and I was able to use this to my advantage to pull off the move”, said McColligan. Shortly after the pass, a full course caution caused some confusion on track. Post-race review kept McColligan in P5. “What a weekend! To be racing with IndyCar and bringing home a strong finish is so awesome”, summed up McColligan. The fight for the Season Championship now moves to Buttonwillow where MC Racing will again have the Mazda RX8 ready for battle.
