[SONOMA, CALIFORNIA] – June 24, 2025 – Mad Man Motorsports, building on their recent victory at Round 2 in Laguna Seca, continued their impressive 2025 United States Touring Car (USTCC) season campaign at Round 3, held on June 21st. Driver Andy Chittum showcased remarkable skill and consistent speed, achieving a personal best lap time and contending for an overall podium finish on the challenging 2.52-mile course.

The NASA Norcal weekend event, renowned for its exceptional conditions and competitive environment, brought together top touring car teams for Round 3 of the USTCC season. Mad Man Motorsports arrived with high expectations following their recent success.

Saturday morning’s qualifying session presented a unique challenge as USTCC competitors shared the track with the NASA C group, resulting in high traffic density. Despite the crowded conditions, Chittum masterfully navigated the circuit, utilizing strategic pit entry to find clear track. On his second hot lap, he piloted the Hankook-equipped Mazda SMX MX5 to an outstanding lap time of 1:50.4. This impressive time marks a personal best for Chittum at the venue and places him a mere 0.2 seconds shy of the all-time USTCC Sportsman class lap record, underscoring the formidable pace of the non-aero, 2-liter NC MX5.

Sunday afternoon’s race saw Chittum starting from pole position, surrounded by a competitive field of K24-equipped Hondas, BMWs, and fellow Sportsman class entries. The typical USTCC standing start launched fifteen cars up the hill into turn two, often running two-wide through turn six. Chittum executed a strong start, initially yielding position to more powerful cars but quickly regaining ground once the field settled. He demonstrated astute race craft, executing passes on faster class TC cars on the inside of Turn 3 and the outside of Turn 6. Chittum then decisively overtook the GogoGear FK8 Civic entering Turn 11, propelling him into clear air with only the top two TC cars ahead.

Settling into a sustained high-performance rhythm, Chittum consistently logged lap times in the low 1:51s and high 1:50s, meticulously managing the Mazda’s temperature limits while relentlessly pursuing the leading TC and GT machines. Over the next six laps, the powerful yet heavier TC cars steadily came into view, and by Lap 9, Chittum had successfully reeled them in, advancing towards the front of the field. In the race's final moments, the sole leading GT car, a BMW M4 which had shown superior pace earlier, appeared to be experiencing tire degradation, allowing Chittum to close the gap dramatically as the white flag flew. Though Chittum managed to put the nose of his MX5 alongside the M4, the BMW’s significant 2.5x power advantage enabled its driver to pull ahead by 1.6 seconds at the checkered flag.

"It was an incredibly challenging but ultimately rewarding weekend," stated Andy Chittum. "The team at Mad Man Motorsports prepared an exceptional car, and while we were pushing for the top step, to achieve a personal best and contend against more powerful machinery until the very end is a testament to everyone's hard work."

Mad Man Motorsports will return August 31st to Thunderhill Raceway for Round 4 of the 2025 USTCC season.
