In a race defined by resilience, Marion Engelke drove the #65 Gary’s Airbag Service (GAS) / Automotive Calibration Specialists (ACS) BMW E36 to a hard-earned fourth-place finish at the United States Touring Car Championship Round 4  Thunderhill 2.5 Enduro. The result came despite a critical mechanical issue that tested both driver and machine during the second half of the grueling endurance event.

Halfway through, a loud bang and smoke in the cabin demanded an emergency stop the hot pits. A rear differential bolt worked itself loose, compromising drivetrain alignment and triggering a cascade of performance challenges. Torque delivery became inconsistent, reducing acceleration and top-end speed. Repair in the hot pits was impossible, so Marion had to drive the car as it was. However, determining the issue had cost her 4 laps in the hot pits. But giving up wasn't an option.

At higher RPM’s, the vibration from the drivetrain imbalance got worse. Thunderhill’s fast sections became a balancing act as misalignment and gear backlash added friction and resistance, forcing the engine to work overtime just to maintain pace. With the threat of catastrophic failure—such as a seized gear or snapped driveshaft, Marion adapted driving strategy to preserve control, managed throttle inputs, and drove the car to the finish, even clocking the fasted lap times during the during the last segment of the race.

The heat at Thunderhill put an additional strain on the car and driver – and also the incredible pit crew that managed refueling the car in about half the allotted time. Special recognition goes to Ben Penn of Penn Kraft Racing, crew chief, spotter, and mechanic extraordinaire, whose expertise kept the #65 BMW E36 in the fight. Gratitude also goes to Team Cobalt California for their camaraderie and support, to USTCC, Speed SF, and Thunderhill Raceway Park for hosting another unforgettable event.

“To everyone who supported me—trackside, online, or from afar—thank you,” said Marion. “Your energy kept me grounded. We’re now working on getting the car ready for the next race, locking down every bolt, and coming back stronger!”

Marion extends heartfelt thanks to sponsors Patricia and Gary Trudeau of Gary’s Airbag Service (GAS) and Automotive Calibration Specialists (ACS) for their unwavering support. Marion also proudly welcomes expectus Inc. as a new sponsor, whose partnership strengthens the foundation for future races.

With the car already undergoing post-race inspection and setup refinement, Marion and the team are looking ahead to the next challenge—more prepared, more focused, and more determined than ever.
