Bovenberg wins both races at Buttonwillow
The United States Touring Car Championship came into Buttonwillow Raceway for a very rare doubleheader weekend, September 12-13, 2020.
The ARG MBO Motorsports Racing team knew that the outcome could very well determine how the rest of the season would unfold. The team was definitely on a mission. The ARG MBO Racing Honda Si, sponsored by Supertech, Rota wheels and Redzone Racing driven by Pete Bovenberg set a very fast pace challenging the rest of the field to meet his fast times, as he took the provisional pole position by over a second.
At the start of the race Pete Bovenberg took control of the race and fended off all the other drivers to earn the victory. “When the green flag dropped it was a mad scramble to the first corner. There were clouds of dust and dirt all over. I took the outside move and hung it out in the corner and got into the lead, pushing hard and never looked back.” said Pete afterwards.
The Saturday victory helped put the team solidly in first place toward the Championship. Sunday morning came the realization that now the ARG MBO Racing team would have to add the rewards weight from the day before. The USTCC director decided to mix things up and change directions of the track making it a whole new set of challenges for all the teams.
The start of Sunday’s race saw the entire field of cars pack into the first very tight corner. “The car was extremely heavy and hard to control but at the start I saw a little space on the inside corner and put her in the right spot. I pulled into the lead as everybody else got stuck in traffic and that's all I needed to get distance from the other cars. I'm very grateful for the victory as it has been a long time since I have won a double header weekend,” commented Bovenberg.
The team now heads to Sonoma Raceway for the final race of the season on October 10-11, 2020.
