Sonoma, CA – Round 3 of the United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC) at the iconic Sonoma Raceway proved to be a nail-biter, with drivers pushing their limits and trading positions throughout the race. The challenging twists and turns of Sonoma once again provided an exhilarating backdrop for a day of fierce competition.
The Sportsman class saw a captivating duel unfold between Andy Chittum in the Mad Man Motorsports Mazda MX5 and Tom Lepper in the GoGoGear.com/Konig Wheels Honda Civic. Chittum initially secured the pole position, but Lepper quickly overtook him, setting the stage for a race-long battle. Lepper appeared to have the upper hand until a spinning car forced him to take evasive action, allowing Chittum to seize the opportunity, get by, and pull away for the win. Tom Milburn secured a commendable third place in his Milburn Motorsports Acura RSX.
The Touring Car battle was an internal team showdown between Ali Arsham and Ken Kurtz, both driving GoGoGear.com/Konig Wheels Hyundai Genesis entries. Arsham, starting from second, got a fantastic start and took the early lead. However, Kurtz, who started from pole, steadily closed the gap. The two teammates then engaged in a thrilling exchange of the lead, swapping positions four times before Kurtz ultimately emerged victorious. Enrique Ferreira, in the ARG Motorsports/Ecoblox/Rose General Construction BMW 330i, rounded out the podium in third place and was also awarded the Plastex Top Rookie award for his impressive performance.
In the GT class, Doug Makishima showcased a dominant performance, taking the win in his ARG Motorsports/Ecoblox/Rose General Construction BMW M4 GTS.
The teams now look forward to a summer break before the next round, which will feature a 2.5-hour endurance test, promising even more excitement and strategic challenges.
